- Create an escape plan.
Repelling wasps
A wasp nest need not be on your property at all to cause a nuisance to you. Besides, you usually don’t know exactly where they are coming from.
Here are some tips for chase away wasps, but beware: it can also make the wasp very angry.
- Hang a water bag at
Fill a sturdy clear bag with water and hang it where you want the wasps to stay away. The sparkle of the water will deter wasps and keep them at bay. - Use wasp spray
Spray a wasp with a spray containing an approved insecticide, from this the wasps will die. This spray is safe to use indoors to kill wasps, but be careful with children and pets. There are also sprays available that cause wasps to perceive the environment as unattractive. You spray areas where wasps are common, such as walls, ceilings, lamps, window sills, and heating elements. Many of these remedies can also be sprayed into the nest, according to the instructions. “Spray long into the nest,” the instructions for use for one of the products say. Do not do this, you are putting yourself in great danger!
- Use an (electric) fly swatter
This also works against wasps, but the wasps don’t always die right away, so you then have to squash them with your feet. Make sure you have your shoes on when you do this!
- Use a plant sprayer
If there are wasps nearby, spray them wet with the plant sprayer. The wasps will think it is raining and return to their nest. Also, wasps can’t fly or find it harder to fly with wet wings.
Make your own wasp trap
You can buy wasp traps, but you can also make your own. Such wasp traps or “lemonade traps” look like inverted bottles with an attractant at the bottom, often lemonade. Wasps are attracted to the sweet smell, fly into the jar and don’t come back out. The wasp eventually dies of exhaustion. Wasp traps work, but they have two disadvantages. You actually lure the wasps and only some of the wasps eventually end up in the trap.
Use fragrance against wasps
Wasps do not like a strong smell, let alone smoke. Therefore, light a few incense sticks and place them in a location where there are many wasps. They will then avoid this spot.
Other odors that repel wasps are:
- Ammonia
- Vinegar
- Lemons
- Citronella
- Eucalyptus
- Grilled rosemary
- Ground coffee
- Garlic
- Copper coins
- Onion
- Vermouth
Make use of a fake wasp nest
You have the option of creating your own fake wasp nest or purchasing one ready-made online. What happens when you hang the wasp nest? If you do this in early spring, there is a chance that you will mislead the wasp queens who are looking for a location to build their nest.
Plants against wasps
What other measures can you take for wasp control? There is also a solution to this from Mother Nature. Several plants secrete odors that wasps do not like. Consider plants such as:
- Lavender
- Tomato plant
- Mint plant
- Wormwood
Plant these plants around an area where you want to repel wasps, and many wasps will avoid the area.
Sound against wasps
There are devices on the market that emit ultrasonic waves that are inaudible to humans but audible to wasps. The wasps want to escape the noise and therefore leave.
Disadvantage: Dogs and cats can also be annoyed by the sound, so check beforehand whether such a device is really suitable for use.
What kind of wasps do you have in the Netherlands?
Most nuisances are caused by the common wasp and the German wasp. The French field wasp has also been observed frequently in recent years. Although this wasp is relatively harmless, it can sting. The French field wasp builds many small nests, while the Common Wasp and the German Wasp build one large nest. In both cases, the queen bee is at the top of the hive. The same is true of European hornets. These wasps look like large wasps, but they are reddish-brown in color. If you see a large, usually black bee with yellow legs, it is an Asian hornet.
