Flies
Autumn Flies live on fences, fences and walls. But you also encounter them near cows and horses. You often see the flies near the mouth, nose and eyes. Female fall flies lay their eggs in the spring. At a time, they lay 6 to 26 of them near manure of mostly horses and cows. An autumn fly is 6 to 7 millimeters in size when mature. Before reaching this stage, each fly undergoes a 4-stage metamorphosis.
The cluster fly lives mainly in cavity walls of tall buildings or in attics. The fly is about 8 millimeters in size. A female cluster fly lays her eggs in the ground. When they hatch, the larvae parasitize on earthworms. When mature, they have a silent hibernation period after which they become active as the weather warms and the sun shines. The grass fly at three millimeters, is a lot smaller than the cluster and fall fly. The fly has a yellow to green color with three black stripes on the top of its thorax. Female grass flies lay their eggs primarily in the soil of pastures. When the eggs hatch, the larvae parasitize on aphids. You encounter grassflies mostly in the fall when they are looking for a wintering place in tall buildings.
Sewer flies, also known as moth flies, are often even smaller than grass flies. They grow between 1 and 5 millimeters in size. Female sewer flies lay up to 100 eggs at a time. They are mainly active at night and live for an average of 10 to 50 days.
The flesh fly grows up to 20 millimeters in size and lives for about 5 weeks. Female flesh flies lay hundreds of eggs at a time especially in environments with decaying products or feces.
