Gnawing noises, mouse droppings and gnawing damage, nothing is more annoying than being bothered by mice. Not only do they cause visible damage, but they can also cause health risks. But how do you know if they are actually mice? Read below on how to recognize them.
Recognizing a mouse infestation
How do I recognize mice? To determine if you are suffering from mice, you can check if you recognize the following signs:
- The curious nature and constant search of mice for food creates the gnawing sounds that you often hear early in the morning and late at night.
- Mice look for the best food available at the time. They prefer to eat grains, seeds, insects and nuts. To have the best food available, mice often gnaw small holes in food packages.
- Mouse droppings are oblong, dark in color and 3 to 8 mm in size. The droppings are scattered everywhere because mice eat in different places.
- A strong pungent odor is caused by the urine of mice. The odor is a combination of ammonia and musk and gets stronger as you get closer to the mouse infestation.
- Mice gnaw constantly on electrical wiring, plastic and/or wood to ensure that their teeth remain short and sharp. This is necessary since teeth are important to the mouse in the search for food. Gnawing damage is not only an annoying sight but can also cause short circuits or fires.
Do you recognize these signs?
Then chances are you are suffering from a mouse infestation. Mice can spread various diseases and reproduce at lightning speed, so they can form a large family in a short period of time. In addition, freely available poison is not strong enough to get rid of mice by yourself. Because of this, it is important to hire a professional pest controller .

Mice
Lifestyle
The house mouse is mostly active at night. Prefers to live in quiet sheltered places but has great adaptability. Mice live in groups where there is a clear hierarchy. They have poorly developed vision so they rely on their whiskers when moving. In contrast, the house mouse has a highly developed sense of smell with which it can find its way around.
Eating behavior
Propagation
Mice reproduce at lightning speed; a mouse nest usually consists of 4 to 14 mice. When large food supplies are available, a mouse can provide a large number of offspring in a short period of time. In this way, a mouse can quickly form a large family.
Preventing a mouse infestation
- Make sure food is stored tightly sealed.
- Seal cracks and crevices so that no mice can get through them.
- Clean up clutter and trash immediately.
- Don’t let the dishes wait.
